What do you love about being a working mom?
I get a lot of gratification from the “juggle” of it all. I am from a small town where I was exposed to very traditional women’s roles. Women who took on the responsibility of raising kids and managing a household, taking a backseat to contributing to the family’s principal.
I feel a lot of pride to have broken out of that mold to be the breadwinner for my family.
For me, it’s the best of both worlds.
I get this amazing experience to raise these boys, and a career that allows me to create my own identity outside of the house.
What is the biggest challenge of being a working mom?
Finding a healthy balance, especially with technology that allows us to be accessible anywhere. The urge and immediate guilt of checking work email at the dinner table, and the same feelings and guilt with logging out early to make it to a kiddos track meet.
If you had a magic wand, what one thing would you change about working mom life?
I still work from home, so I’d create an AI virtual assistant that I’d install on the outside of my office door. It would alert my 5 year old if I’m on a video call, and welcome him in after checking to make sure he is wearing pants.
I think I am on to something; can I trademark this now?
What tips do you have for other working moms?
Give yourself the space, and grace to fail. Don’t fall in to the “do it all, have it all” trap.
There will be days that you feel like shit.
Any relationship tips for working moms?
Be careful with the limited free time you have, spend it with people who fill your cup.
What's the best piece of advice your own mother gave you?
Pick your battles, don’t waste your energy on things you have little control over.
What stresses you out?
Besides the state of our country and the world we are leaving to our kids? I stress about long-term financial planning, if I’ll have enough saved for college and retirement.
How do you mother yourself?
I sign up for different running and swimming events so I have something to train for, and to prove to myself I can accomplish it. Or if I am stuck on a problem at work, I go for a walk.
Movement sparks optimism and creativity for me.
