I get overstimulated so easily, that even the quietest “mom can I have a snack?” can push me over the edge if I am already over stimulated.
Name:
Anneliese King
Current Occupation:
I am a MOM first, with lots of shitty moments, and I share them all on my instagram page @shittymommymoments. I also run our luxury bottle/cleaning brush brand, Noble Newborn.
# of Children and their Ages:
I have four ridiculously overstimulating boys, aged 9, 5, 3 and 37.
They bring me lots of joy but also lots of absolute SHIT moments.
What do you love about being a working mom?
My children motivate me to continue working because OMG focusing 100% of my time on them would break me. And I would know, because I have been a stay at home mom before. It’s MUCH harder, even with the added stress that working brings to the table.
What is the biggest challenge of being a working mom?
As with everything, the biggest challenge is, in fact, the children.
I don’t have set working hours, and it can be difficult for me to check out. I think I have a lot of guilt about being distracted on my phone when I am with my children.
If you had a magic wand, what one thing would you change about working mom life?
That literally no one cares.
I often feel like I am still responsible for everything that involves the wellbeing of my children, regardless of the fact that, I too, am contributing to the household with an income.
If someone is sick, that’s on me. IF there is a “WEAR RED” day at school, that’s on me to remember.
My partner is a partner, but the mental load of running the kids lives is definitely on me.
What tips do you have for other working moms?
To let go of the guilt.
Working and being a parent means that you will never be able to be 100% at both of those jobs at the same time.
I try to pick what I will excel at each week, and just realize that some weeks my kids are not going to come first and sometimes I am going to have to reschedule a partnership or be late on a deadline because I have to prioritize motherhood.
But my working ultimately benefits my children, so its not selfish to keep going!
Any relationship tips for working moms?
My answer here has to do with avoiding resentment.
As a work from home mom, I am also responsible for the home. At least that is how it feels, because I am here all day even though I am working and raising kids.
What has helped my husband and I divide some of the jobs that traditionally might have fallen on me is by my making a list of things that need to get done and tagging him, so we never even have to talk about it, its just there on the joint list.
And the other thing is choosing to give things up. I rarely do the bath time routine, I decided I just am done by that time of day and that is his job.
Pick something that you can give to your partner to do, because "doing it all" leads to resentment.
What's the best piece of advice your own mother gave you?
My mom said, “Don’t do anything you wouldn’t want posted on the front page of the New York Times.”
I am pretty sure I have personally shared things that I would regret being on the front page of anywhere, but that is what we do over here.
We share.
What stresses you out?
My. FAMILY. No but seriously. They are SO LOUD and the noise drives me insane. Clutter, deadlines, and noise.
I get overstimulated so easily, that even the quietest “mom can I have a snack?” can push me over the edge if I am already over stimulated.
How do you mother yourself?
Not well. Not well at all.
But when I realize ahead of time I am about to have a mental breakdown because someone left a sock on the floor, I tell my family I am about to lose it and I need a break and I go sit quietly somewhere.
I write as an outlet, I use Motherbar, I have a glass of wine, I lie down and watch a non stressful show, read a calm beach type read like Elin Hilderbrand.
I need quiet sometimes to be a good mother.
How and why do you take CBD?
I am extremely high strung, and in the past that has resulted in too much alcohol consumption. It is not easy for me to relax or calm down, and Motherbar specifically has given me a little bit of calm on really bad days.
